The Best Places to Hunt in Costilla County, CO

If you’re looking for an awesome hunting adventure, Costilla County offers some of the best big game in the state! The region has all kinds of wildlife including antelope, bear, mountain lions and elk! In addition to the abundant wildlife, hunters can expect to track game through mountain habitats, sagebrush flats, pinyon, and juniper rangeland. This is what hunting is all about, getting out into nature and going back to our roots.

The weather is a significant factor for the hunters in this area, so make sure to be prepared. Snow causes herds to get down fast from high elevation. Hunting here can also be tough since animals may move quickly to vast areas that are private land, and onto the Baca National Refuge, or the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

But do not fear. There is a “Greenbelt” in Sangre de Cristo Ranches that has over 5,000 acres set aside for hunting and recreation. The Trinchera Elk Herd in Game Management Unit 83 is one of the largest in Colorado with an estimated population of 16,000 elk. Herds of deer, small game and waterfowl are also common to the greenbelt.

With the limit on buck licenses in San Luis Valley, deer hunting has greatly improved. Lucky hunters have a high success rate drawing a buck tag. The low population of deer allows for doe hunting only in private land, to ensure that the issue of game damage is addressed.

Elk hunting is also great but it does not include the thrill of pursuing animals in the challenging terrain. So for experienced hunters, this is a favorite spot! As the winter weather approaches, the success for elk hunting increases. However, the snow may end up making it difficult to hunt as it makes travelling difficult.

Check out the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Big Game Brochure for licensing and permits with limits and information.

If you are looking for a more structured or a guided hunting trip, check out Trinchera Ranch near Fort Garland. It is the county’s most popular guest ranch and is sure to be a blast for expert and new hunters alike. The ranch encourages hunters to bring their own equipment, but a bow can be provided if necessary. Trinchera Ranch can even issue your hunting licenses directly. They will send you the required license application form for completion prior to your arrival. Processing of game meat, taxidermy and shipping can be coordinated by them as well. It’s a one-stop shop for hunters.

Well there you have the basic tips for hunting in the beautiful San Luis Valley. Happy Hunting Folks!
